Quebec Information

Quebec is a Canada's largest province by area and located in the east-central portion of Canada. It is the only Canadian province with a predominantly French-speaking population.

Quebec is also Canada's second most populated province (Ontario is first). Most residents live in urban areas near the Saint Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City. The capital. English-speaking communities and English-language institutions are mostly concentrated in the west of the island of Montreal.

Politics is an important issue in Quebec. The official opposition social democratic Party Québécois advocates national sovereignty for the province and secession from Canada. Sovereignist governments have held referendums on independence in 1980 and 1995; however, both were voted down by voters.

The leading economy in Quebec remains it's natural resources. Yet, other sectors such as, information and communication technologies, biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry also play an important part and have helped make Quebec become the second most economically influential province, second only to Ontario.
